SurfTech 5000 Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) Coating

Molybdenum disulfide. Gray / silver finish.

Molybdenum disulfide is a solid lubricant. It shears along its own layers, which is why it lowers friction in places where oil cannot be used, cannot be retained, or would contaminate the product.

Molybdenum disulfide

The film is applied where a lubricant has to stay on the part rather than be fed to it. Vacuum service, food and packaging contact, assembly torque control and dry running fits are the usual reasons to specify it.

  • Lowest coefficient of friction in the SurfTech range
  • Works where liquid lubricant is excluded
  • Very thin, so it holds assembly clearances
  • Applied over a harder film where load is also present

Typical figures for MoS2

Chemistry
Molybdenum disulfide
Appearance
Gray / silver
Hardness
Lubricating film, measured by wear life rather than hardness
Coefficient of friction
0.03 to 0.10 dry against steel
Maximum service temperature
660 °F / 350 °C in air
Typical film thickness
0.5 to 2 µm
Deposition temperature
Below 200 °F

These are published typical ranges for the MoS2 material system. They describe the chemistry. The certified figure for your substrate, geometry and duty comes from the SurfTech data sheet, which is issued with the quote.

Typical applications

  • Dry running fits and slides
  • Assembly torque control on threads
  • Vacuum and clean service where oil is excluded
  • Release and anti-stick duty
