How to choose a coating
Abrasion points at the boron carbide films. Galling and adhesion point at the films with a lubricating phase. Impact and corrosion point at chromium nitride, and general tooling duty at titanium nitride. The substrate then decides how thick the film can be.
Every PVD code in the range is applied below 200 °F, so the substrate is rarely the thing that rules a coating out. PTFE is the exception: it is spray applied and cured through the Euclid Refinishing line.

Parts we coat
Cutting tools are the obvious case. The rest of the work is production components, where the film is bought for friction, corrosion or dimensional stability rather than for edge life.

Rolling and sliding contact, often running hotter and drier than the design allowed for. Friction is the lever here.

Ground geometry that has to survive the coating. A film one to four microns thick leaves the tolerance intact.

Loaded contact under heat, where a lubricating phase buys back the margin that removing oil took away.
